You have force my hand. It had been nagging me over the holiday break but the Eclipse move to Android Studio was a deterrent. It's sad it's taken this long.
I need to move from Eclipse to Android Studio because I use Android Studio for my other developments.
You should be able to target older versions of Android easily. For interest here is the break down of my active users:
4.4 = 26%
4.1 = 18%
4.2 = 15%
4.0.3 = 14%
2.3 = 10%
4.3 = 6%
5.0 = 5%
I'm targeting 4.03 and up. 2.3 is too hard to support.
I was going to suggest the NDK but I have no experience with it nor do I know if it's a logical path. All I know it that it's hard because of debugging support, etc...
BTW, there is a way of getting Android apps working as a Chrome extension, i.e., on Windows, Linux and OSX. I was able to install the extension and Pixel Dungeon working (see screenshot).
