You should be able to enable R-clicking by going into System Preferences -> Hardware (Mouse) and changing the RH Primary Button to Secondary Button. Can also do similar for the trackpad (there is an actuator under the bottom-right corner) or you can use two-finger clicking which should do the same thing.
I suspect that the only reason that Apple don't have this turned on by default is because they don't want to admit that it's actually not a bad idea.
