Looks like that Jim had the reason to use LTG in medium size while 'Opening' image in small size. Most likely, he did some experiments, with the result, probably: TEXT (in Opening.bmp) is better stretched (from small to medium and large) than shrunk (from medium to small.) On the other hand, PICTURE of object (in LTG) is best in medium size. For that reason he made the source rectangle in small size (not in medium size.) Just guessing.

PS: Looks like that your bitmaps are 8-bit, not 256-bit.
