new levels. He sorts the levels and put
them in the appropriate files
(Challenge-III, Sokoban-I, Beginner-II,
and Special-I.) He lets (makes) all
levels 'No Rating', except the levels
that should go to Beginner-II file which
have 'Kids' rating. The allocations and
the ratings are temporary because the
GHS hunters may have second opinion.
They could ask the level manager to move
the levels to other file. Actually, GHS
hunters are the people that assign the
ratings.
We should trust GHS hunters that give
the ratings. They have experience in
solving so many levels. Anyway, the
ratings are not for the level creators;
they are used by players at large as
guidance in selecting the levels with
the 'right difficulty'.
There is subjectivity element in giving
the rating. It's unavoidable. Jay wrote
about this in this forum a few months
ago.
Ihab described four criteria about
difficult levels in this forum less than
three weeks ago.
Now, I want to share my opinion.
1) Auto Pilot.
I found some levels that look
complicated. The creators had to spend
much time to design such levels. However,
the players have not given many options.
The players just follows the path (to the
flag) that was beautifully designed by
the creators. For example, the tank will
be dead if it moves to other directions.
Or, the tank can't move, so it should
shoot until a bridge is ready in front
of it or a movable object is shifted to
give it a way, etc. The player doesn't
need to see beyond the horizon. He just
looks around the tank and does something
legal. The creator will guide the player
to the flag.
2) Long Levels.
I got an email message telling me that
he rates the levels by their length. The
fact is, the 56 Kheper' deadly and hard
levels have: <500 moves (42 levels),
500-999 moves (8 levels),
1,000-1,199 moves (3 levels), and
>=10,000 moves (3 levels).3) Difficult Sokoban levels.
a) Player has many options but almost
all of them end up to either deadlock or
back to one of the previous states.
b) Improper use of objects will result
'not enough block/object' at the end.
c) No surplus of the blocks at the end.

Suyono
