I have been thinking a way to save our group for a long time.
A big group of people had been interested in lasertank at first, but because of their limited talent and limited time,they cannot reach the level of IHAB,I&B,or SQIR,TINA,LFE, etc...thus, they cannot conquer many well-designed levels, cannot make use of tricks(bugs), cannot discover the excellence of masterpieces,so they cannot see the real grace of lasertank. Finally most players chose to quit. At least they seldom talk on Yahoo Group.
Not the personnality but the environment forced us to be silent.They are not too busy to talk because they even have much more time to solve and create levels.I guess that jojo, fern, tina, jay, pono, and many many more people don't want to be silence but they cannot find topics. I believe that many players want to communicate with and learn something from good players, but a no-exception rule banned them.
We should make levels affordable. We need plebification rather than gentrification.
My bold suggestion is: let some good levels(100-300,I estimate) be open to everybody! that is, make the lpbs(they may include HS lpb) be open to everybody. players can freely communicate with others about the solutions, the ideas, or only the impressions. They can also upload and download lpbs and snapshots. The advantages are: first, we have enough topics on lasertank and everybody has something to talk. Then the group will be alive. Second, we good players put a part of good levels together, so that rookies will not waste time to look for good levels in tens of thousands of levels. Third, everyone can learn new things from others, so that a large group can raise their skill faster than before, and faster than in other games. Only tutors didn't do this well. That is like, a teacher taught his students all high-school knowledges before giving them exercises.
Only a few talent LT'ers can master them. Fourth, from watching others' excellent solutions, especially flowery trick-solutions, players will have much more interest. Fifth, hundreds of "open levels" only take up 1% of all lasertank levels. Only 1% open level will not block 99% DIY levels. particularly, The 1% will probably attract 500% talking people.
It seems unfair to GHS holders. But I guess there will be some ones who are kind enough to share part of their experiences with each other. They will certainly recieve more respects. And I personnally think that nothing is more important than the survivorship of our forum, and, our game.
Winter will not be long. I strongly believe that Sharing leads to Spring. Anyway, we need act rather than complaint.
PS. I sent this letter to Donald yesterday. and today we will discuss the topic further. Yesterday I started my vacation and it will end on Feb. 28.
