hostile environment. cute, little, mobile, all-terrain machine.
thinking ahead. moving down the tank-mover onto the ground. blocked
by rock. irradiating/shooting rocks. spirit's computer even locked up.
i can't get enough of that stuff - "Opportunity" is soon going to
chemically analyze and photograph by microscope finely layered
sedimentary rock on another planet!!! it doesn't get any cooler than
that. the raw data is getting uploaded almost real-time to the public
server - i've already made my own "discoveries" by reaching
conclusions about the geology and such in the images before anything
was said on the site or on tv, like the bounce marks as "spirit"
bounced through "sleepy hollow", and the sedimentay stratification
(layering) that "opportunity" has imaged inside its crater. i've
downloaded about 100 MBs of stuff from:
http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/home/index.html
at other sites, there are even a bunch of QTVR panoramic high res
interactive 3D image models (quicktime virtual reality)
for "spirit's" landing site (totally amazing) and soon
for "opportunity". some are better than others, ".mov" files about 1
to 1.5 MB each.
let's hope there are no anti-tanks or water on mars - well, deep
water that is. maybe they'll put a laser on the next rover.
