That's (mostly) great news, Donald.
It sounds like it might just be the hard drive that's faulty.
However, your entire machine is close to the end of its useful life,
so maybe it is time to buy a new one.
Since you have stated that your financial situation is not as
favourably disposed towards this as you would like, will you accept
donations from those of us who are able and willing?
I wouldn't consider it charity - you have donated much of your time
for the entertainment of us and this is one way of us repaying that.
